Hotel bookings over the Internet have created the perception that hotel deals can be had at any price. Sites like Priceline and Expedia are almost like an auction process and of course several sites operate purely on the premise that we will receive deep discounts.
It is true that many of these services will help find us discounted rooms, but buyers beware! You need to understand where the discounts come from and how pricing strategies in hotels work. Otherwise chances are that you will have bought, or in this case booked, what you paid for.

Like many other industries the hotel industry’s pricing is based on supply and demand. But as I mentioned in previous articles, hotels sell “bananas”. If the room isn’t sold tonight, you can’t put them up for sale at a discount the next day.

If you find a deeply discounted hotel in a particular area, the normal and logical scenario would be that the overall demand in the region, city or district is low and similar discounts should be available at other hotels.

If there aren’t, the question becomes why this particular hotel needs to discount. Is the location not prime? Are service and product standards low? Are renovations taking place? These are only a few reasons and many experienced travelers can give you many more.

So, buyer be aware and don’t book the first deal that you come across. Travel in itself is stressful and your hotel should be your haven and anchor while on the road. Invest the time you deserve!
